I'm a casual reader during my teenage days, casual because I'm broke ass, and only have few books. E-reading was already a thing back then, I remember using my Alcatel phone as an e-reader and use to read fantasy books for inspiration because I write novels as well *sigh* good times bro, good times.
Kindle was on my wishlist for a very long time and finally I got one as a birthday gift for myself, I bought it for P 6,500.00 (112 USD) it is a secondhand unit but in a very mint condition, and came with 3 cases and inserts as freebies.

Very cute and pretty
Review
Display: 4.8/5
The display is good and not straining on the eyes when reading, this is the very purpose of Kindle and other similar e-ink readers, they are designed for reading because it doesn't emit blue light unlike LCDs. With Kindle PPW5, I can read faster and longer, I like that it doesn't have glare unlike tablets. Kindle works on natural light even with zero brightness, and mimics the texture of the paper.

Portability: 4.5/5
Kindle PPW5 is very portable, handy and can fit my small bags, the only downside however, is the weight of PPW5, yes it is compact but can hurt your wrist after hours of reading, I see a lot of reviews that they preferred the Kindle Basic because it is lighter and smaller.
Battery Life: 4.5/5
To be honest, the battery didn't last 10 weeks to me lol because I read approximately 1-2 hours per day and 6 to 7 hours during rest days (depending on the availability) with wifi turned on, also I charge my Kindle once it reached 30% battery, I preferred it that way.
Overall Thoughts
Kindle PPW5 is worth every penny, this device is definitely one of my best purchases in 2024 although Amazon had released an upgrade I think there is not much difference compared to newer generation (based on the reviews). Is Kindle PPW5 still worth it? A big YES. Definitely a life changer, at least to me. My mental health got better? *fingers crossed* I don't know if it's a hyperfixation, hopefully not. Life gets rough sometimes but at least I have my emotional support Kindle, reading put me at ease, and since the device is solely for reading it lessen my social media exposure, hopefully, I can live without it.
My overall rating is 4.6/5

IBM Watsonx Assistant For Z V2’s Document Ingestion Feature
IBM Watsonx Assistant for Z
For a more customized experience, clients can now choose to have IBM Watsonx Assistant for Z V2 ingest their enterprise documents.
A generative AI helper called IBM Watsonx Assistant for Z was introduced earlier this year at Think 2024. This AI assistant transforms how your Z users interact with and use the mainframe by combining conversational artificial intelligence (AI) and IT automation in a novel way. By allowing specialists to formalize their Z expertise, it helps businesses accelerate knowledge transfer, improve productivity, autonomy, and confidence for all Z users, and lessen the learning curve for early-tenure professionals.
Building on this momentum, IBM is announce today the addition of new features and improvements to IBM Watsonx Assistant for Z. These include:
Integrate your own company documents to facilitate the search for solutions related to internal software and procedures.
Time to value is accelerated by prebuilt skills (automations) offered for typical IBM z/OS jobs.
Simplified architecture to reduce costs and facilitate implementation.
Consume your own business records
Every organization has its own workflows, apps, technology, and processes that make it function differently. Over time, many of these procedures have been improved, yet certain specialists are still routinely interrupted to answer simple inquiries.
You can now easily personalize the Z RAG by ingesting your own best practices and documentation with IBM Watsonx Assistant for Z. Your Z users will have more autonomy when you personalize your Z RAG because they will be able to receive answers that are carefully chosen to fit the internal knowledge, procedures, and environment of your company.
Using a command-line interface (CLI), builders may import text, HTML, PDF, DOCX, and other proprietary and third-party documentation at scale into retrieval augmented generation (RAG). There’s no need to worry about your private content being compromised because the RAG is located on-premises and protected by a firewall
What is Watsonx Assistant for Z’s RAG and why is it relevant?
A Z domain-specific RAG and a chat-focused granite.13b.labrador model are utilized by IBM Watsonx Assistant for Z, which may be improved using your company data. The large language model (LLM) and RAG combine to provide accurate and contextually rich answers to complex queries. This reduces the likelihood of hallucinations for your internal applications, processes, and procedures as well as for IBM Z products. The answers also include references to sources.
Built-in abilities for a quicker time to value
For common z/OS tasks, organizations can use prebuilt skills that are accessible. This means that, without specialist knowledge, you may quickly combine automations like displaying all subsystems, determining when a program temporary fix (PTF) was installed, or confirming the version level of a product that is now operating on a system into an AI assistant to make it easier for your Z users to use them.
Additionally, your IBM Z professionals can accelerate time to value by using prebuilt skills to construct sophisticated automations and skill flows for specific use cases more quickly.
Streamlined architecture for easier deployment and more economical use
IBM Watsonx Discovery, which was required in order to provide elastic search, is no longer mandatory for organizations. Alternatively, they can utilize the integrated OpenSearch feature, which combines semantic and keyword searches to provide access to the Z RAG. This update streamlines the deployment process and greatly reduces the cost of owning IBM Watsonx Assistant for Z in addition to improving response quality.
Use IBM Watsonx Assistant for Z to get started
By encoding information into a reliable set of automations, IBM Watsonx Assistant for Z streamlines the execution of repetitive operations and provides your Z users with accurate and current answers to their Z questions.

If you need .docx files, then instead of LaTeX, which is set up to produce .pdf, (although you can produce html files, open them with word, and save as .docx but that's dubious and ive never done it myself) may I suggest libre office writer:
Libre office is a free and open source implementation of all the Microsoft office suite, and can both export and import from the Microsoft formats. Having no language models to my knowledge fighting over your text, it might work better without altering your workflow too much either.
However I must warn you, do a couple of tests. Conversion to and from microsoft format can sometimes mess with things, or has done so for some people in the past... I won't just cry out Microsoft sabotaging open source software with no proof, because it could very well be the inherent difficulty of switching formats, but I won't say it's not that either.
Look if it works for you. Also, might I ask, why is there specifically the need for .docx?
Working on formatting my dissertation, which means putting it in Word among other things. Now, we all know that Microsoft has seemingly spent the last decade or two frantically shotgunning ways to make this software less usable,* but a new wrinkle is that Word now automatically adds alt text to images, and it looks like they're using the same kind of overly-ambitious-autocorrect / so-called "AI" that we're all distressingly familiar with.
One result of this is that when you add a pie chart (my dissertation includes dozens of these, so it keeps coming up), there is a significant chance that the machine gets confused by the word "pie" and starts assuming there must be a pie crust somewhere. This isn't a one-off; I've seen it multiple times now.
Also it thinks the text is white for some reason, not sure what that's about, as the only white text is the alt text itself. Either it's misreading "black and grey on a white background" as "white" or it's just straight-up guessing.
Accessibility is important and all, and I firmly believe images should have alt text if you're putting them in any kind of public-facing document, so I'm glad Word is pushing for that, but I can't imagine this particular approach is helpful. Crust aside, "a colorful pie chart" does not tell you anything about what the image is trying to communicate.
*Genuinely, every time I format a chapter in Word, I fantasize about doing it on a typewriter instead because it would be easier. The hard part, though, would be convincing the university to accept it in that format. Plus I'd have to buy a typewriter.

Hello! I believe I’ve seen you mention binding an ebook… can you share any details on that? Did you have to copy/paste all the text into a text editor like you would for a pdf? One of the authors I follow has recently posted their stories as both PDFs and ebooks, and I’m wondering if one is better to work with than the other. Thank you!
Apologies for the delay - I have mentioned this!!! So, the short version is that pdfs are possible to work with if you have no other options, but almost any other method of text delivery is going to be easier for you to work with if you're trying to make an ebook into a physical book.
So, for the most part, I work from ao3. There are options on there for downloads in form of epub/mobi/pdf/etc, but for the most part, I select from there and drop it right into word, which is the program I use to typeset books. Some other programs are a little more finicky (I think some of them are cooperative if you download from ao3 as html), but this is a system that works well for me.
I have done some work with ebooks, though, with things posted elsewhere! I will confess that my very lazy secret is that whatever ebook I get, I just open it in calibre, and tell calibre to convert it to a docx file :V I already use calibre to wrangle my ebooks, so it's very convenient for me to do the conversion in there, and then just take and edit the document into shape for typesetting.
I have worked from pdfs if I was absolutely desperate, but that tends to be an experience that leaves one very determined to never do that again. Typesetting can still be a little finicky in other formats, you might get weird line breaks and stuff, but it's so much easier to convert files or to copy and paste. And the renegadepublishing tutorial I worked from when figuring out how to typeset does focus on taking fics from ao3 and putting them into word, but some of the issues the tutorial discusses with styles and formatting help give a little context to why more flexible formats (ebooks, html) are easier to work with than formats where the contents have been visually set in stone (pdf). I hope that helps a little!!!
#spock replies#bookbinding#typesetting#should maybe have a separate tag#i decide fourteen months after the fact

Second writing rant
Warning: I get really, really passionate about writing software.
If you are writing using Word or Pages or Google Docs or some knockoff of those because it's what you have always used, then don't fool yourself, you are fucking sabotaging yourself. They are designed for producing office publications. Not long-form writing, and not short stories. For the sake of not putting in some time to get the hang of something else, you are wasting so much time and effort fighting the software it's not funny.
There are so many alternatives.
For long-form organisation of writing, I like Ulysses best, but it is subscription only now, which is a pain. (I like to buy outright). It's also Mac only, and my Macbook is unhappy. But it is so, so lovely, for writing, for document management, for everything. Minimalist AND full featured.
Scrivener is an outright purchase now, though, and is less ugly than it used to be. The note cards and outline view are awesome. It used to be my go-to before my conversion to writing in markdown.
Bibisco is free/premium and is just a beautiful writing environment if you like to track characters, timeline and scenes and ALL THE DATA.
For actual text production, I like clean, minimalist and Markdown. And there are SO MANY free or text editors. Also, they play much more nicely with AO3 than Word, Docs etc, because most can copy/paste in HTML. And some minimalist markdown software (like Ulysses) makes it trivial to make beautifully formatted .mobi, .pdf, .docx, .epub or whatever you want documents. Take that, Word and your stupid styles.
Draft is the very best web-page text editor for collaboration, version control and beta-ing, and it's free, although I did choose to subscribe because it's simple, customisable and I use it every day. It also does great stuff like track when you are most productive.
For desktop, Typora is a WYSIWYG markdown text editor and is just so damn pretty and useful and thoughtfully designed. I love it so much I could die. And it’s FREE.
On a phone, I like iaWriter (also has a desktop version and is good for collaboration) and Pure Writer (love the customisable soft keyboard taskbar). Train yourself to write on a phone, and you will never be without a way to fill spare moments.
Right now for longform original work, I write on a variety of minimalist markdown text editors according to mood, and will pop the chapters in Ulysses to export in manuscript form.
But find what you love best. Just don't stick with what you use at work/school because you are afraid to experiment.
Here are some links to start exploring.

Preserve Meta-Characters during Replacement & Enhanced LINQ Reporting Engine inside Java Apps
What's New in this Release?
Aspose development team is happy to announce the monthly release of Aspose.Words for Java 18.1.0. There are 63 improvements and fixes in this regular monthly release. The most notable includes improved character spacing control logic, improved space shrinking for Verdana font, improved “allow handing punctuation” handling when kerning is enabled, Fixed clip issue with semi-broken tables, Fixed draw order of wrapped shapes in 2013 mode, Fixed repeated header height problem during field update, Fixed the bug causing error in page numbers in multi-page documents rendered into PostScript, Proper calculation of undocumented margins in DrawingML Charts implemented, Horizontal axis of Bubble Chart scaling fixed, Vertical axis of 3DArea Chart scaling fixed, MS Word 2016 approach for rendering of DrawingML Charts axis labels implemented; (Labels are rotated to fit the chart), Fixed rendering of Legend markers for 3D-LineChart, Improved rendering of composite (with multiple series) charts and Chart title with ManualLayout rendering fixed. This release has enhanced the support of data band inside a single-column table row for LINQ Reporting Engine. In previous versions of Aspose.Words, when opening and closing foreach tags are inside same cell, the output contents would be in the same cell. Starting from Aspose.Words 18.1, users can export the single-column data band in separate new row using greedy switch. This has enhanced the support of conditional blocks in table’s row for LINQ Reporting Engine. If users put an opening if, elseif, or else tag and a closing if tag in the same cell, the engine treats a template option formed by these tags as a common one rather than a table-row one by default. However, users can override this behavior making the engine to treat such a template option as a table-row one by specifying a greedy switch. It has added FindReplaceOptions.PreserveMetaCharacters property in Aspose.Words 18.1 to preserve meta-characters beginning with “&” during replacement. In this release, Aspose team has removed following obsolete public method from CompositeNode class. The parameter “isLive” is not used anymore. Please use CompositeNode.GetChildNodes(NodeType nodeType, bool isDeep) instead. It has added new feature in the release of Aspose.Words to show or hide the chart axis. You can use ChartAxis.Hidden property to achieve this. XmlMapping.StoreItemId property has been added in this release to specify the custom XML data identifier for the custom XML data part. Please read DataBinding class for more detail about storeItemID property. The list of new and improved features added in this release are given below
Add feature to show/hide axis of chart
API to get geometric position of element in Word Doc
Add feature to get w:storeItemID of StructuredDocumentTag

How to Explain Plagiarism Checker to Someone Who Knows Nothing About It?
Today we are going to give you guys a complete guide which will help you understand plagiarism and plagiarism tool. If you are new to the term plagiarism tool and plagiarism checker free websites, then don’t worry and don’t get confused we would surely help you understand the basics and the complexities of plagiarism in no time. you just have to read the article below so that you can get the main idea of how plagiarism scanners and advanced plagiarism checkers work online and offline! We hope that you will find the below information very useful in your writing career!
What Is Plagiarism?
To understand the working of a plagiarism tool, it is very important that we first learn about the concept of plagiarism and what it really is! For those of you who are new to these concepts must read the article carefully so they can get the hang of the concept in the first go.
Plagiarism is actually the stealing of content no matter what form and using it as your own original. To explain it as any layman would do plagiarism is a concept that refers to the copying of original content from a published source and using it in your own content without giving reference or credits to the original writer or author! We will like you to digest the concept of plagiarism before you move forward for the working of a plagiarism detection tool!
What Are Plagiarism Detecting Tools?
If you are clear with the concept of plagiarism, then we would move towards the next section of today’s article. The plagiarism detection tools as the name tell us are responsible for the detection of that content that is illegally copied from the original source. Now, this is very important these days because all of the business on Google runs on the basis of new and unique content, and if you are not publishing unique content on Google then it means that you are not serious towards your website and you are least interested in getting business or good ranking on your website!
Now if you are interested in getting traffic and business, then you need to use a plagiarism checker to detect any plagiarism in your content and also to detect whether someone is using your content on your website! Using a plagiarism scanner has become the most important need of today's digital world, and if you are eager about learning how the plagiarism detector works, then we would recommend that you read the section below!
How Does the Plagiarism Checker Free Software Works?
Well, it seems impossible that a plagiarism software can detect plagiarism by comparing your file with trillions of files available on the web these days, but it is quite possible because of the advanced algorithms being used by these tools. We will talk about the advanced plagiarism checkers today that is famous and popular for producing the best reliable results, the most famous names in the list are:
Search engine reports
DupliChecker
Small SEO tools.com
Grammarly!
Turnitin
All of the above-mentioned tools are popular for producing reliable results for checking efficiently and quickly. Now, these tools work on a simple principle that we have discussed plenty of times before. The principle is named as split and check by us. This term is understandable in its own terms, and it means that the plagiarism checker is capable of splitting your text into small phrases and sentences. Your text or 1000 words is divided into 120 equal parts, and then it is compared with the database on the back end of the website. Famous tools have more than 15 billion web pages available on their database, and the number keeps on increasing every day as new content is being published every day.
Important Features That Need to Be Taken into Consideration!
Here are some important features that you need to consider while making a choice for a plagiarism checker! All of the above-mentioned tools that are said to be on the top of the fraternity of checkers have these features!
The first feature that needs to be considered by the users is the safety of the document that is submitted for checking plagiarism. Conventional plagiarism checkers are very dangerous to use as they can surely check your document for plagiarism but they at the same time pose a serious threat to your documents in terms of security. As most of the sites are not secure your document can easily be misused when you submit it for checking.
It can be stolen by hackers and writers. To save your document for any security threat and to ensure safety, you must use the best plagiarism checkers that we have mentioned above!
The second most important feature that you must consider while planning on using a plagiarism checker is to ensure that your results are reliable. You can only make sure of it when you know that your document is being scanned by more than hundreds and thousands of websites across the web. The top plagiarism checking tools that we have mentioned above are capable of scanning your documents and comparing them with more than 15 billion web pages across different search engines, Google being on the top of them!
The third most important feature in these tools is that they support multiple file formats. Suppose you have a PDF file that needs to be checked for plagiarism and the tool that you are using is not capable of checking PDF files, what will you do in that case? Waste more time in conversions? The best tool for plagiarism checking will accept all formats of files that include doc, Docx, HTML, RTF, txt, odt and PDF. You don’t have to worry if you have any file format while you are using one of the above-mentioned tools!
The fourth important feature of a plagiarism checker is the issuance of its plagiarism checking report that is accepted along with documents at the time of submission, especially in the case of academic documents. A plagiarism report is the proof issued by the tool that the document scanned had no traces of plagiarism in it or the percentage of it if it has some. A comprehensive plagiarism report is an important feature of a well-reputed tool.
The fifth feature and the most wanted one these days is the suggestion of citation and referencing in a document. Citation and referencing are very important, especially if you are rephrasing someone’s work, a good plagiarism checking tool will always have this feature that will help you in adding a reference to the author of the original text.
A good tool must also provide you downloading and sharing features as a default! The above-mentioned tools have this option!
Think about it yourself if the tool would compare all of the text as a whole then everyone can get away with copying all of the content and changing a few words in the content, but the plagiarism detectors work in such a magnificent way that they can detect even the smallest percentage of plagiarism in a blog or an article!

Writing Programs
I don’t discuss this overly often, but regardless of whether I’m writing professionally or personally, I use a few programs that have become helpful standbys over the years. Feel free to add on recommendations:
1. Notepad - Microsoft’s old faithful. Perfect for simple text markup and creating html files. I don’t use it as often as I used to for writing, but it’s very useful for copy/pasting when I need to remove formattng before transferring it to a different document. Price: Free with Windows.
2. Textpad - This program is essentially Notepad on steroids. It’s actually multi-functional as a coding and writing program. I love it for formatting files because once you save it as a file format, it will colorize the coding so it doesn’t blend in with your text. I use it for smaller works like drabbles or short fiction that I’m publishing on the web, as well as larger files that I want to convert to html formatting. They actually allow you to download the program for a trial run before purchasing it, so you can get a feel if you like it before laying down the money. Price: 27 USD/16.50 GB
3. Microsoft Word - Everybody knows this program for a reason. Like it or not, it’s sort of the Ferrari of word processors. I’ve used it for years, and I particularly like it for editing. The new markup proofing function allows me to track changes and transfer those to whatever program I have the original document in. I don’t typically like to write in Microsoft Word itself because it’s autoformatting - unless it’s an academic paper or something requiring stylized formatting - but it’s something that gets regular use in my house regardless.
Now, obviously, Word is on the pricier side. It will run you about 130 USD. My recommendation is just shell out the extra $20-30 and get the Office suite. You may as well get PowerPoint, Excel, and Notepad for a few bucks more than just waste time buying Word. Particularly if you’re a student, chances are you’re going to be using PowerPoint at some junction, anyhow. This being said, if you are a student with an active school email, you can sign up for Office 365 for FREE. It’s Cloud-based and is missing some of the higher level functions you get from buying the program, but if you just need simple word processing, you’ve got the majority of what you need right there.
Google Docs is also free with a Google account and can be used to create Microsoft compatible documents. However, it is online-only (meaning you need a sturdy connection) and has less functionality than a downloadable program. Before I bought word, I used to write my papers in a text editor or something similar and then copy it into their word processor to avoid potential erasure incidents. For versions you can actually download, a less expensive alternative to Microsoft Word that I would recommend is AbiWord. The program is essentially a “stripped down” form of Word with similar design. It’s entirely free and capable of creating Word compatible files, at that. Just be warned that once you save it as a .docx file, you can’t reopen it in AbiWord. I usually saved two versions - one as an AbiWord file, and one as a .docx in case I needed to make changes later.
4. Scrivener - This program is a very cool little writing program that allows you to set up writing projects by selecting the format of the intended work (short story, novel, novel with, etc.) and then allowing you to create a “workshop” for that piece. You can do all the intended formatting for your text/spacing/font/etc. as you would with Word, and there is a spellcheck included in there, as well. (Admittedly, Word is still better for catching grammar issues, though.) What I really like about it is the ability to separate documents in chapter format and move them around on a display that looks like a virtual dashboard. You can add and remove chapters easily and work on them separately without having to finish one or the other. You can covert files then to different formats like PDF, DocX, RTF, etc., which makes it easy to set them up for conversion into epub/MOBI files later. They actually have a scrapbook program (Scrapple) that can be used as a brainstroming editor with compatible file formats, though I don’t have personal experience with it.
My favorite thing about it is that you can actually sync the files across multiple platforms by creating a DropBox for them and then downloading Scrivener on other devices. I have the PC version, and then I also dropped $20 for the iPhone app, and I use it to glance over files when I’m traveling or just jotting down ideas I have when I’m not at my computers. (If you pick up a Bluetooth keyboard, you can even use the phone version as a typical editor, too!) For those of you who write fictional professional or particularly those that plan to self-publish, I think this program is worth the price tag. Price: 45 USD
